Frustrations of a College Student: Tips to survive that last-minute class suspension

Frustrating is the fact that college students are the ones who always get left behind whenever there are class suspensions amid a strong rainfall or a typhoon. Once we get the notice that our classes are finally suspended, the streets are already flooded, rainfall has become stronger, and public transportation vehicles become hard to chance upon.

As such series of unfortunate events may happen again this rainy season, here are some tips that students should remember:

Make sure that your phone is fully charged. It’s already 2016. Everything revolves in technology so make sure that you have your phone ready in case you’re stuck in a flood, a traffic jam, or if you need a ride home.

Avoid going to the malls. Seriously, avoid those big buildings. If there’s one thing you should notice about a city’s geography, it’s that malls are usually placed downtown or at the city center. And you know why it’s called downtown? That’s because the ground there is much lower than any other parts of the city! (arguable) Which means that the flood is more likely to rise faster than anywhere. So just head straight to your home or dormitory and log on to your social media account and stay safe and informed!

Make sure you’re already familiar with all the public transportation routes. Either you’re from another city or not, you need to familiarize yourself with all the public transportation routes. There will be times that the one route you always go to are heavily flooded which means you need to take other routes. If you want to survive in the city, natural calamity or not, public transportation is the key. And if you’re not familiar with it, then best of luck to your ordinary routine!

Keep your rainfall equipment useful and sturdy. Umbrellas, raincoats, et cetera. All of them should still be useful by the time you’ll head out to the torrential rainfall. Of course, you wouldn’t go to school without an umbrella considering the weatherman just said that a typhoon’s coming your way in a few hours, right? So better keep that umbrella tight ’cause other people might share it with you, and they might destroy it while they’re at it!

If you’re living in a dormitory, make sure that you have plenty of food and water stored in your cabinet. Remember that once class suspensions reach the tertiary level, rainfall becomes really intense. And there’s probably going to be a strong typhoon, prompting your university to postpone classes for a few more days. So always make sure that you have food and water that will seriously back you up for the next few days.

Other than that, a common sense would be nice. You’re already a college student so probably know how to survive something that only lasts for a day or two. Otherwise, you’re going to need to evaluate your life.
