DOH: Be mindful of the rainy season

With the onset of the rainy season, the region’s Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday, July 17, reminded the public of the possible diseases they may acquire from the rain.

DOH said that their National Epidemiology Center (NEC) reported that WILD, which stands for Waterborne infectious diseases, Influenza, Leptospirosis, and Dengue, are the most common communicable diseases during this season.

In order to prevent waterborne diseases that can be acquired through water contamination, Regional Director Napoleon Arevalo said that the public should practice proper waste disposal.

“Waterborne and foodborne diseases are transmitted by ingestion of contaminated food or water. This includes diarrheal diseases that are caused by several species of the salmonella and shigella bacteria, cholera, hepatitis A, and typhoid fever,” Arevalo said.

Arevalo also advised parents should make sure that their children are protected from rains and flashfloods by providing them rain equipment like umbrellas and raincoats.

“They should always be reminded by weather forecasts in order to be proactive,” Arevalo added.

An online check indicated that among the four types of diseases classified by the NEC, Dengue remains the most dominant of them all. As of June 11, the DOH has already recorded at least 52,177 suspected cases of dengue across the country since January 2016
